Board votes to renew Lean King's contract
With all the TIP Academy excitement at the last board meeting, it was easy to overlook the unanimous decision by the board to continue Lean King's contract through 2012, as reported in the North County Times today. From the few board meetings I've been to, it is clear the board and Dr. King have a mutual admiration society, which isn't a bad thing. In recommending the vote on July 8, board members gushed at King's brief but busy record in the district. Congratulations, Dr. King!

Why is the "mutual admiration society" such a good thing? Doesn't "mutual admiration" between a board and EUSD superintendent/employee start to come pretty close to "self-dealing", the evil that TIP was accused of?
This board is in fact a rubber stamp for Dr. King that provides no "oversight" at all. And all parties (the board and the "good Dr") are characterized by the worst kind of complacency in regard to teaching students. If the test scores of the district are OK, then everything must be just fine.
Dr King's fat contract, and that of several other PhD's at the district office, could fund who knows how many PE teachers, teachers aides, music, art, and technology programs, etc. Meanwhile, our kids get PE two days a week, with instructors paid for with donations. Class size limits are circumvented by moving kids to other classrooms after taking 8am attendance. All "enrichment" programs for music, art and tech rely on parent donations.
If you have tens of thousands of dollars to give to your kid's school, the board and superintendent will be responsive to you. But if you just have a few hundred or less that you can afford, and a bright kid, then thanks for helping to keep the test scores up now shut your mouth and be happy you live in Encinitas where your kid can learn to surf.
