Adios, Alternative Language Program?

I received an email this afternoon with concerns from a parent that the Alternative Language Program at Paul Ecke Central School is on Lean King's chopping block. Dr. King has expressed his concerns with ALP parents that, if test scores at PEC don't improve, the ALP program will have to go. Observing his track record this year, I am doubtful there will be any real discussion with parents at PEC, but rather a swift late night dismissal of the program. Hopefully,this is just rumor. Or, perhaps he is figuring he is going to get more than an earful when he and the board close TIP, what's a little more fuel on the fire! Keep an eye on the district's board meeting schedule for yet another 'public forum'!

The Alternative Language Program probably needs to go. It is only for K-3 students, and the English speakers cease speaking Spanish at that point. Meanwhile the Spanish speakers are not becoming fully bilingual. Hence, they are behind their peers who are using English in the classroom - and being tested in English.
In addition, the students in ALP are not learning science and social studies as well as are their peers not in the program.

ALP = a huge failure

Get rid of it and help the kids learn.

Stop catering to immigrants only to end up hurting everyone.

Speak English and survive or get out of the way.

Wow, that's some pretty hateful speech. It's unfortunate that you would rather hurt your child's potential education to reinforce your negative views. Multi-language education is commonplace all over the world with success that puts the U.S.A. behind most industrialized countries. Maintain that archaic perspective and we will stay that way.

BTW, EUSD IS going to cut any second language program at PEC. Though their concern for the kids may be genuine, their support for ALP/DLI is less than full-fledged.
